David Knoff’s career has been shaped by environments where certainty is rare and leadership matters most.
Born and raised in Melbourne, Australia, David graduated from Monash University with a Bachelor of Arts in History and Politics while completing officer training in the Australian Army. In 2007, he deployed to the Solomon Islands as an infantry platoon commander — the beginning of a career spent operating in complex, high-pressure environments.
David later joined Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, serving in diplomatic postings at the Australian High Commission in Islamabad and the Australian Embassy in Baghdad. Embedded alongside Australian and coalition forces, he worked in regions where conditions changed daily and decision-making carried real consequences.
WHAT THEN BEGAN AS A ROUTINE DEPLOYMENT QUICKLY BECAME A DEFINING EXPERIENCE RESHAPING LEADERSHIP PERSPECTIVE AND EVERYTHING THAT FOLLOWED.
In 2019, David joined the Australian Antarctic Program as Station Leader at Davis Research Station, East Antarctica. That year, what was meant to be a routine expedition became one of the longest continuous Australian Antarctic deployments in modern history when the COVID-19 pandemic stranded the team through the Antarctic winter.
With no certainty around evacuation timelines and operating in complete isolation, David led a team of 24 through unprecedented uncertainty — an experience that would define his approach to leadership and resilience.
Since then, David has led multiple Antarctic voyages and expeditions, including resupply missions to Australia’s Antarctic stations and the Denman Terrestrial Campaign — the largest deep-field scientific expedition Australia has undertaken on the continent.
With more than 15 years’ experience across the military, diplomacy, and Antarctic leadership, David now shares the lessons learned from the world’s most extreme environments to help others lead with clarity, adaptability, and resilience when it matters most.
